Development of DBD plasma actuators: The double encapsulated electrode
نویسندگان
چکیده
Plasma actuators are electrical devices that generate a wall bounded jet without the use of any moving parts. For aerodynamic applications they can be used as flow control devices to delay separation and augment lift on a wing. The standard plasma actuator consists of a single encapsulated (ground) electrode. The aim of this project is to investigate the effect of varying the number and distribution of encapsulated electrodes in the dielectric layer. Utilising a transformer cascade, a variety of input voltages are studied for their effect. In the quiescent environment of a Faraday cage the velocity flow field is recorded using particle image velocimetry. Through understanding of the mechanisms involved in producing the wall jet and the importance of the encapsulated electrode a novel actuator design is proposed. The actuator design distributes the encapsulated electrode throughout the dielectric layer. The experiments have shown that actuators with a shallow initial encapsulated electrode induce velocities greater than the baseline case at the same voltage. Actuators with a deep initial encapsulated electrode are able to induce the highest velocities as they can operate at higher voltages without breakdown of the dielectric. & 2015 IAA. Characteristics of Ozone Generated from Dielectric Barrier Discharge Plasma Actuators
Abstract—Dielectric barrier discharge plasma actuators (DBD-PAs) have been developed for active flow control devices. However, it is necessary to reduce ozone produced by DBD toward practical applications using DBD-PAs. In this study, variations of ozone concentration, flow velocity, power consumption were investigated by changing exposed electrodes of DBD-PAs. Two exposed electrode prototypes ...
متن کاملPlasma Virtual Actuators for Flow Control
Dielectric-barrier-discharge (DBD) plasma actuators are all-electric devices with no moving parts. They are made of a simple construction, consisting only of a pair of electrodes sandwiching a dielectric sheet. When AC voltage is applied, air surrounding the upper electrode is ionized, which is attracted towards the charged dielectric surface to form a wall jet. Control of flow over land and ai...
متن کاملBluff Body Flow Separation Control using Surface Dielectric Barrier Discharges
Surface dielectric barrier discharges (DBDs) are used to delay flow separation behind a bluff body in atmospheric pressure air. The bluff body is made by connecting a flat plate to a half cylinder tangentially as a round-cornered trailing edge. Four DBD plasma actuators are attached along the surface of the half cylinder. Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) is utilized for studying the velocity fi...
